Dieting is hard enough without having to deal with the psychological problems associated with doing so. If it was simply a matter of eating less, or better foods; exercising more or taking a pill, none of us who are overweight would be overweight for long. Unfortunately, there are outside forces that need to be dealt with if dieting is going to be effective. This article is going to explore those outside forces and explain how to deal with them in the most efficient way possible. Hopefully, after reading this, you won't allow those outside forces to prevent you from dieting the way you should.
One of the worst outside forces when it comes to dieting, and one that causes serious psychological distress, is peer pressure. Let's face it, we all feel it. Ironically, you would think that our friends would encourage us to go on that diet. Sadly, this isn't always the case. An all too common scenario is going out to eat with your friends and when it comes time to get dessert, they're all pigging out on their hot fudge sundaes while you're eating some fruit. Instead of cheering you on in your effort to diet, they poke fun at your choice of dessert. Certainly doesn't make eating that fruit any easier. So the next time you go out to eat with them, what do you do? You get that hot fudge sundae, if for no other reason than to avoid the mocking.
Believe it or not, the second worst outside force, or psychological problem, is ourselves. We carry around so much emotional baggage and fear of failure with us when it comes to dieting that sometimes we're too afraid to even get started. What if we can't stay on our diet? What if the diet doesn't work? What if I can't do the exercise routine? What if it takes up too much of my time and denies me the time I want to spend doing more fun things? What if, what if, what if? We are so filled with what if's that it's a miracle we get anything accomplished in our lives. If you're going to have any chance of pulling off a successful diet, you have to get over the fear of failure. We're all going to fail at something once in a while. When you fall off a horse, you simply get back on. That's what you have to do when it comes to dieting.
Dieting, in reality, is not a difficult process. Modern science has it down to just that, a science. We know how many calories we have to eat and how much exercise we have to do in order to lose the excess weight. From there, it's just a matter of doing it. Yes, we have minds and our minds have a tendency to be weak at times. Well, that's why it's even that much more important to tell our minds that WE are the ones in charge and that we're not going to let out fears stop us from achieving our goals.
The psychological problems with dieting are real, but they can be conquered.
